Norfolk Militia (Heritage Regiment) Fall Newsletter - 2003
This has been a year I don't think any Norfolk will forget.
As announced in an earlier newsletter, the annual meeting will take place Sunday, November 2, starting at 1 p.m., in St. Paul's Parish Hall, St. George Street, Port Dover.
This meeting reviews what took place this season, makes plans for next year and gives members a chance for a say in the operation of the Norfolks.
ELECTIONS
As previously stated, there will be a change in the election of the executive. The chairman, vice-chairman and three members-at-large will be elected. The three members-at-large may or may not fill the positions of treasurer, quartermaster and secretary. If not, these positions will be filled by appointment or volunteers.
This means next year's executive could have five elected members and three non-voting members.
To stand for election a member must be nominated and seconded from the floor. The person can decline the nomination or agree to stand. If more than one person is nominated for a position, an election by secret ballot is held.
This year this procedure will be gone through more slowly than in the past.
DUTIES
The chairman basically runs the day to day business of the unit. He organizes executive and annual meetings, responds to correspondence, replies to event invitations, handles problems that crop up and interacts with other units.
The vice-chairman handles the duties of the chairman when he is not available and any duties assigned by the executive.
The treasurer handles the financial affairs of the unit, the quartermaster is responsible for the transportation and care of the unit's equipment and the secretary takes and distributes minutes of meetings.
Currently Bob Blakeley is chairman, Don Charuk vice-chairman, Ruth Schumaker treasurer, Jon Bowman quartermaster and Russ Greatrex member at large. Christine Mulholland is recording secretary and a non-voting member.
AGENDA
If you have an item you would like to place on the agenda would you contact a member of the executive well in advance of the meeting. This will ensure it gets properly discussed.
There are several important issues to be discussed at this meeting and hopefully as many people will attend as possible.

LADIES WEEKEND
Linda Hanna has planned a spectacular weekend that the ladies of Norfolk will not want to miss.
In addition to getting to know everyone, the ladies will have a seminar on herbal remedies, great food (learn how to do that) and good company.
The floor of the cabin at Backus will have been replaced by then and you can let us know if the men of the Norfolks came up to your standards.
CHAIRMAN'S NOTE
I hope to see all of you at the annual meeting.
There are several important issues to be discussed and we need your input.
We have many new members and this will give all Norfolks a chance to meet them and welcome to the our unit.
KUDOS
Your Captain, Larry Hanna, was given complete command of the British line at Chatham.
This only enforces our rigorous training schedule and shows we are going in the right direction.
Well done Larry, and our command staff.
This does not happen by accident, it is earned and shows the Norfolks can take their rightful place in 1812 re-enactments.

IN CLOSING
This has been a very difficult year, in more ways than one. I hope to see as many Norfolks as possible at the annual meeting. We have dispensed with the snacks this year and hope to keep the meeting as simple as possible.
If you have an item you want discussed, please let one of the executive know before hand.
Bob Blakeley
