Mandatory Stuff...
Time Commitment
Needless to say, we'd be thrilled if you can come to all our events and help us really fill out our lines, but we do understand that in this day and age, that's not terribly realistic. (None the less, we'd love it if you could!)
There are only two mandatory "turn outs" for volunteers to our group...
Our Spring Training in April and the Backus Mill event.
Aside from these, it's strongly recommended and asked that you try to show up for a minimum of three events (from the executives "Recommended" list,) aside from these essential two.
Of course, we are flexible and if circumstances work against your ability to attend things, just let the folks in command know and we'll work something out.
For dates of events and which one's were selected by the executive as "Recommended", please see our calendar of events for more information.
Group Dues - Annual Money Commitment
You will also need to pay the annual dues and insurance. For information on these, you must contact the folks in command and get the current number as far as how much this is. Normally, it is well under $100 CDN per anum, but our insurance rates may change which may lower or raise the "dues" as the years move on. As of May of 2003, our annual dues were $50 CDN per person.
Without this payment received, we're afraid that you will be unable to come out and work with us in the events we attend.
Your Kit
Initially, we will of course help out in any way we can for people who wish to volunteer to come out, but unlike a couple of other groups of re-enactors, we do not provide uniforms, clothing or firearms. You must acquire these for yourself.
We have a page devoted to what you will need and what is recommended and the ideal kit for you to start re-enacting with the Norfolk Militia (Heritage Regiment) Re-Enactment Group.
As a ballpark idea, to start out and be able to simply join us in an encampment, it's roughly $250 CDN (on top of your dues) to gather the initial kit for a man and about $200 for "camp followers" (women/men not in the field). What this entails is listed on our page about kit requirements. (See link below)
The page with kit requirements can be accessed by clicking here
Age/Gender Requirements
Unlike a few (not all, but some...) groups of re-enactors, The Norfolk Militia (Heritage Regiment) Re-Enactment Group do welcome women to "join us" in the field (granted, you must "dress" as a man... don't worry, we won't force you to "bind" yourself, but if you have long hair, we do ask that it's kept up and under a kerchief under your hat) and age restrictions are fairly standard.
To join up, you must be a legal adult where you are located. (ie: in Ontario, Canada - over eighteen years of age. In New York, USA - over twenty-one years of age) unless you are joined by your parent or guardian.
Camp followers (not soldiers in the field but people in the general encampment... "non-combatants") are also very welcome!
For information, it is truly recommended to contact The Norfolk Militia (Heritage Regiment) Re-Enactment Group's Command and get the answers to assist you.
Special Needs
People that are physically challenged or have special needs who are interested in joining should contact The Norfolk Militia (Heritage Regiment) Re-Enactment Group's Command and explain the situation. As we do "encamp" and are expected, for some members, to go in the field, march, and genuinely re-enact battles, you may want to check into any issues or possible problems that may arise if you join us.
Transportation Needs
Since the majority of events are probably not happening around where you live and, you must remember, you will be carting around your kit, making sure you have a way to go to these events is a very good idea. Still, like y'r humble webmaster, if this is a problem, you can look into car-pooling and other possibilities. No guarantees with this, but it can work well.
For example, just before an event, maybe posting a message on our message board asking for assistance to get a "lift" to an event may be in order and helpful.
