What's New On The Site?

A Call to all interested Re-Enactors and Living Historians (Nineteenth Century) in Ontario...

From Zach Melnick, Coordinator, Ontario Visual Heritage Project

We are producing two non-profit documentaries on the history of Elgin and Oxford Counties, and we are holding a re-enactment weekend on July 31st - August 1st at Fanshawe Pioneer Village to re-enact the following local events:

  • War of 1812 in Elgin County (Aletta Rapelje Story, Talbot escaping capture, Burwell being captured)
  • The Talbot Celebration Dinner (Includes free catered meal)
  • The Rebellions of 1837 (Dr.Duncombe gathering people to fight, McNab's forces coming to Norwich)
  • The first recorded baseball game (1838, happened in Beachville Ontario)
  • Admiral Vansittart coming to Woodstock (Funny story of half-pay officer bringing a tall ship to the Thames)

We will be shooting these over the Weekend of the 31st. A re-enactor can come on either day or stay for both days, and camping will be provided on Saturday night. Costumes for re-enactors are recommended but not necessary however we are looking for several individuals with Militia/ Red Coat uniform.

We are a non-profit group who puts our documentaries freely into local schools and museums as well as on the web at www.visualheritage.ca. However, we will offer the following compensation for any person willing to take part in this event:

  • $50.00
  • A free catered meal on the evening of the 31st.
  • Copies of our previous documentaries on DVD or VHS format (Brant County, Norfolk County and Haldimand County).
  • Free Refreshments.
  • Free camping for 1 night if you stay over at Fanshawe Conservation area. (please contact us as soon as possible about this).
  • A free barbecue on the afternoon of the 1st of August.
  • A good time! We try to make our events as fun and enjoyable as possible for all involved!

  • Please pass this email along. If you or anyone you know would like to participate in this event please reply to this email or contact (905) 772-1849 to reserve a spot. Please contact us as soon as possible as spaces are limited.
